What to know about a BRCA gene mutation in men

BRCA1 and BRCA2 help cells repair damaged DNA. An inherited change in one of these genes can make some cancers more likely, including male breast cancer, prostate cancer, and pancreatic cancer. A positive result does not mean that cancer is present or certain to develop. The meaning depends on the gene, the exact variant, your personal history, and your relatives’ health history.

Testing may be done with a blood or saliva sample. Genetic counselling can explain whether a result is harmful, uncertain, or not found, and can help you decide what information to share with relatives.
