Short answer

Athlete's foot in athletes is a contagious fungal infection that thrives in warm, damp footwear and shared changing areas.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How athlete's foot behaves

Athlete's foot, or tinea pedis, commonly affects the skin between the toes or across the soles. It may cause scaling, peeling, cracking, burning, or itch. Sweat, occlusive shoes, repeated training, and wet communal floors can create conditions in which the fungus spreads.

The infection can move to other parts of the foot or to the nails, and scratching can transfer it to nearby skin. Several foot problems look similar, so persistent or unusual symptoms should be checked rather than treated indefinitely without a diagnosis.

Protect your feet during training

Keep feet clean and dry, especially between the toes. Change damp socks promptly, rotate footwear so it can dry, and use shower sandals in shared wet areas. Do not share towels, socks, shoes, or equipment that touches bare skin.

An antifungal product from a pharmacy may be suitable for some people; use it exactly as directed and complete the recommended course even if the skin feels better. Wash hands after applying it, and avoid covering the area with tight, non-breathable material unless advised.

When to seek care

Seek medical advice if the rash spreads, the skin becomes very cracked, or symptoms do not improve with appropriate self-care. Prompt review is needed for warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or severe pain. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity should seek advice early when foot skin breaks down.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the rash is fungal, which product and duration fit your training schedule, how to protect teammates and household members, and whether your shoes or socks need a specific cleaning routine. Mention any nail changes or recurrent episodes.

Questions people ask

Can athlete's foot spread during team training?

Yes. Moist communal surfaces and shared personal items can help the fungus pass between people, so footwear and towel precautions matter.

Can I keep training with athlete's foot?

Ask a clinician or pharmacist about your situation, keep the area covered as advised, and avoid exposing others in shared wet areas.
