What to know about ankle sprain in padel players

How the structures involved in Ankle Sprain differ from normal

Short answer

Padel players with an ankle sprain should pause painful play, support the joint, rebuild control and return through graded court drills.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Padel triggers
Lateral steps, pivots, stops and landings
First adjustment
Pause painful rallies and avoid limping
Progression
Walking, jogging, side steps, then court play

How padel can strain the ankle

An ankle sprain affects the ligaments that steady the ankle after the foot rolls or twists. In padel, quick lateral steps, a sudden stop, a pivot near the net or an awkward landing can load these tissues. Swelling, bruising, tenderness and reduced confidence on the injured side are common features. The degree of ligament injury cannot be confirmed from the swelling alone.

Continuing rallies while limping can change footwork and place extra load on the knee, hip or other ankle. A clinical assessment can test stability and movement and can identify features that warrant imaging. More detail is available on [Ankle Sprain](/conditions/ankle-sprain/).

Practical steps for recovery

Stop padel if a movement causes sharp pain or makes you limp. Use a comfortable brace or tape only as advised, and elevate the ankle during rest. A wrapped cold pack may ease discomfort and swelling. Walk with as much weight as feels manageable; use support if normal walking is not comfortable.

Recovery work usually moves from gentle ankle motion to calf and ankle strengthening, then single-leg balance. Next practise controlled side steps, split-step positions, short jogs, braking and direction changes. Test a few easy court movements before longer rallies. The ankle should tolerate each stage without a later increase in pain or swelling.

When to seek care

Seek prompt assessment if you cannot walk a few steps, pain is severe, the ankle is visibly misshapen, or swelling appears rapidly. Urgent care is needed for a cold, pale, blue, numb or markedly weak foot. Arrange review when pain is focused over a bone, the ankle repeatedly buckles, or improvement stalls. These findings can indicate a fracture or a more significant injury rather than a straightforward sprain.

Questions to take to an appointment

Ask whether you need a brace, crutches or imaging; which exercises are suitable now; and how to progress from walking to court movement. Ask what level of pain or swelling is acceptable after exercise, when you may play a full match, and whether taping or balance practice would help prevent another injury.

Questions people ask

When can I return to padel after an ankle sprain?

Return when walking and progressive court drills are comfortable without worsening symptoms. A clinician can tailor the timing to stability and strength.

Should I wear an ankle brace on court?

A brace may help some players during recovery, but fit and duration should be discussed with a clinician or physiotherapist.
