What to Know About an ACL Tear in Padel Players

Short answer
An ACL tear can make padel’s rapid stops, pivots, and lateral movements unsafe until knee stability, strength, and movement control have been assessed and rebuilt.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Padel demands

- Return sequence
- Movement drills, court patterns, then match play
Why padel places demands on the knee
Padel requires frequent split steps, side-to-side movement, sudden braking, lunging, and rotation while reaching for the ball. These tasks challenge the structures that control knee translation and rotation. Swelling, instability, or loss of confidence can make footwork less controlled and increase the chance of another awkward movement.
A knee that feels better in a straight line may still struggle with a change of direction. Assessment considers the ACL, menisci, other ligaments, range of motion, strength, and the player’s usual court role.
Building back to the court
Pause matches and pivoting drills until a clinician has provided a plan. Early rehabilitation may focus on reducing swelling, restoring full knee movement, and reactivating the quadriceps and hamstrings. Later stages can add balance, deceleration, lateral steps, controlled lunges, jumping, and reactive padel drills.
Return should be staged: practise individual movements, then court patterns, then higher-speed rallies before competition. A brace may be discussed for some players, but it does not replace strength and movement training.
When to seek care
Seek prompt assessment after a twist followed by swelling, a pop, giving way, or difficulty bearing weight. Obtain urgent care for a locked or visibly deformed knee, severe trauma, or new numbness or unusual coldness in the leg.
Questions for your clinician
Ask when lateral drills can start, how your knee stability will be tested, whether surgery fits your playing goals, and which return-to-padel tests you must complete.

Questions people ask
Can a brace make padel safe immediately?
A brace may be considered in an individual plan, but immediate return is not assumed; stability, strength, and control still need assessment.
Why practise deceleration before matches?
Controlled braking helps the knee and surrounding muscles prepare for the sudden stops that occur during rallies.
