What to expect from wound care and dressing for an animal bite

Animal teeth can introduce bacteria beneath the skin, even when the surface mark looks small. A clinician may rinse and clean the area, remove visible debris, assess movement and sensation, and look for damage to tendons, joints, nerves or blood vessels. The dressing protects the wound from friction and contamination while allowing staff to inspect it. Depending on the animal, the wound and your vaccination history, the clinician may discuss antibiotics, tetanus protection or rabies assessment.

Keep the dressing clean and dry, and change it as instructed. Wash your hands before and after touching the area. Do not squeeze the wound, pick at it or apply household substances. Keep the injured part raised when practical if swelling is present. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and attend any planned dressing change so healing can be checked.

Seek prompt medical care for a bite that is deep, heavily contaminated, on the hand, face, foot or near a joint, or caused by an unknown or wild animal. Get urgent help for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, worsening pain, spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, red streaks, numbness or difficulty moving the area. A bite from an animal with uncertain vaccination status needs timely risk assessment.

Ask whether the wound needs a dressing change, antibiotics, tetanus protection or rabies advice. Clarify which activities could disturb the dressing and which changes should trigger a same-day review.
