What to expect from wet wrap therapy for atopic dermatitis

Wet wraps cool irritated skin, add moisture, and reduce the urge to scratch. The damp layer is placed over emollient-treated skin or a prescribed topical medicine, with a dry layer over it to hold the wrap in place and protect clothing or bedding. A clinician should show you the technique because the product, body area, and wearing time depend on the person’s flare and age.

The skin may feel cool or tight at first. As the flare settles, itch and redness may ease, but wet wraps are usually part of a wider eczema plan rather than a replacement for regular moisturising. They are commonly used for short courses during troublesome flares.

Wash or bathe as advised, pat the skin dry, apply the instructed product, and use clean materials each time. The damp layer should be wet rather than dripping, and the outer layer should allow comfortable movement. Check the skin during use, keep the person warm, and stop if there is shivering, increasing discomfort, skin damage, or breathing difficulty. Do not apply wraps over an untreated infection or use steroid medicine under them unless the prescriber has given clear instructions, because wrapping can increase absorption.

Get medical advice if the eczema becomes rapidly more painful, warm, swollen, or weepy, or if yellow crusts, pus, blisters, fever, or unusual tiredness appear. These can signal infection or another problem needing assessment. Contact the prescribing team if the flare is not improving with the agreed plan, if the skin becomes very thin or fragile, or if the wrap causes worsening irritation.

Ask which product goes under the wrap, which areas should be covered, how long each session should last, and how often materials must be changed. Check how to taper the routine as the flare improves and what signs mean you should stop.
