What to Expect from Upper Endoscopy for Helicobacter Pylori Infection

You will receive instructions about fasting and medicines before the appointment. At the unit, the team checks your health history, explains consent and discusses throat spray or sedation. A thin flexible endoscope passes through the mouth to view the oesophagus, stomach and first part of the small intestine. Small tissue samples can be taken without a skin incision; you generally do not feel the biopsy itself. The samples may be examined for H. pylori and other changes.

Follow fasting instructions exactly and tell the team about blood thinners, diabetes medicines, allergies, pregnancy and previous sedation problems. Arrange an adult to take you home if sedation is used, and avoid driving until the team says it is safe. A sore throat, bloating or mild cramping can occur briefly. Ask when biopsy results are expected and whether medicines should continue while you wait.

Get urgent medical help after endoscopy for severe or increasing abdominal or chest pain, trouble breathing or swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, persistent vomiting, fever or fainting. A small amount of throat discomfort can be expected, but worsening symptoms need assessment. Contact the endoscopy unit if you are unsure whether a medicine should be restarted.

Ask why endoscopy is recommended instead of another H. pylori test, whether biopsies will be taken, and when results should arrive. Clarify fasting, sedation, medicine changes, transport home and what treatment follows a positive result.
