What to expect from upper endoscopy for Barrett's oesophagus

An endoscope passes through the mouth into the oesophagus and stomach while you lie on your side. The clinician inspects the lining for changes linked with Barrett's oesophagus and may take small tissue samples. Biopsies are sent for examination to check the cells and guide surveillance or treatment decisions. You may have a sore throat, bloating or drowsiness afterwards, especially if sedation was used.

Follow the fasting instructions and tell the endoscopy team about medicines, allergies, pregnancy, swallowing problems and previous reactions to sedation. Arrange an adult to take you home if you receive sedation, and avoid driving until the team says it is safe. Resume food, drink and medicines according to the discharge advice. Keep the follow-up appointment so biopsy findings and the next examination plan can be discussed.

Contact the endoscopy service promptly for worsening chest or abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever, black stools or fresh blood after the procedure. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting or heavy bleeding. Mild throat discomfort can occur, but symptoms that intensify rather than settle need assessment.
