What to expect from tumour removal surgery for oral leukoplakia

Oral leukoplakia is a white patch that does not rub away easily. Before removal, the clinician examines its position, size, texture, and any changes, and may take a biopsy. The procedure can use local or general anaesthesia depending on the patch and the planned surgery. The removed tissue is examined to look for abnormal or cancerous cells and to guide further care.

The wound may be left to heal naturally or closed with stitches. Temporary soreness, swelling, mild bleeding, altered taste, and difficulty chewing can occur. Healing time varies with the location and depth of removal, especially when the patch is on the tongue, gum, cheek, or palate.

Tell the clinician about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, smoking, alcohol use, dental problems, and loose teeth. Follow instructions about eating and drinking before anaesthesia. Arrange a ride home if sedation or general anaesthesia is used.

Use the prescribed pain relief and mouth rinse as directed. Choose the foods and drinks recommended by your team, chew away from the wound, and avoid smoking, alcohol, very hot foods, or anything that irritates the area while it heals. Keep dental and review appointments. A new, enlarging, thickened, sore, or bleeding patch needs examination even after an earlier patch has been removed.

Get urgent help for bleeding that does not stop with the pressure instructions you were given, trouble breathing, or swelling that makes swallowing difficult. Contact the dental, oral surgery, or oncology team for fever, worsening pain, pus, spreading swelling, dehydration, or a wound that is opening. Do not wait for a planned review if the mouth is deteriorating quickly.

Ask whether a biopsy is needed, how much tissue will be removed, where the wound will be, and how eating and speaking may change temporarily. Clarify the pathology discussion, mouth-care routine, smoking support, signs of infection, and how often the mouth should be checked afterward.
