What to expect from tumour removal surgery for Ewing sarcoma

Ewing sarcoma treatment is planned by a specialist team because the tumour can involve bone and surrounding soft tissue. Chemotherapy may be used before surgery to treat cancer cells throughout the body and help the team assess the local response. The operation then removes the tumour with a margin of nearby tissue. Depending on its location, the defect may be repaired with a graft, implant or soft-tissue reconstruction. Further treatment is decided from the full clinical and pathology picture.

The operation can affect walking, lifting or another movement for a period of time. A physiotherapist will show you safe exercises and how to use crutches or other aids if required.

Tell the team about medicines, allergies, dental issues and any new illness before admission. Ask what to bring and arrange an adult to support you after discharge. Follow restrictions on weight-bearing or arm use, protect the incision and take medicines as directed. Keep nutrition, hydration and gentle activity within the limits set by your team. Attend chemotherapy, surgical and rehabilitation appointments as scheduled.

Notify your team about fever, chills, increasing wound redness, discharge, worsening pain, or swelling that is not settling. Report new weakness, numbness or difficulty using the operated area. Go to emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, or a limb that suddenly turns pale, blue or cold.

Ask how chemotherapy and surgery will be sequenced, what structures are involved, whether limb preservation is possible, and what reconstruction is planned. Ask how the operation may change school, work, sport or daily tasks, who will lead rehabilitation, and which symptoms should prompt a same-day call.
