What to expect from tumour removal surgery for chondrosarcoma

Chondrosarcoma can arise in different bones and may grow in a way that affects nearby muscle, joints or nerves. Imaging helps the team plan the incision and the tissue margin. The operation may remove part of a bone, a joint or nearby soft tissue. A limb-sparing approach may be possible, followed by reconstruction with an implant or graft. The specimen goes to pathology so the team can assess the tumour and its edges.

The anaesthetic plan, expected hospital stay and rehabilitation depend on the site of surgery. A team may include surgical oncology, orthopaedic reconstruction, nursing and physiotherapy specialists.

Bring an up-to-date medicine list and mention supplements, smoking, allergies and previous anaesthetic problems. Plan for help at home, especially if bending, driving or climbing stairs will be difficult. At discharge, use the prescribed dressing and mobility aid instructions. Keep follow-up appointments so wound healing, function and pathology results can be reviewed. Physiotherapy should be gradual and tailored to the operated area.

Call the team if the wound opens, becomes increasingly red or painful, leaks fluid, or you develop fever or chills. Report new swelling in an arm or leg, worsening numbness, or a sudden loss of movement. Emergency assessment is needed for severe breathlessness, chest pain, collapse or a limb that becomes unusually cold or pale.

Ask where the chondrosarcoma is located, which structures must be removed, whether the joint can be preserved, what reconstruction is proposed and how it may affect movement. Ask when you can bear weight or use the limb, what pain plan is expected, and how pathology findings will shape the next appointment.
