What to expect from tumour removal surgery for appendix cancer

Some appendix tumours are found during an operation for suspected appendicitis. The surgeon may remove the appendix and send it for examination. If the tumour extends into the bowel, a section of bowel may be removed and the ends joined. When tumour cells or mucin are present across the abdominal lining, a specialist may discuss surgery to clear visible disease, sometimes with heated medicine delivered inside the abdomen.

The final tissue findings help decide whether more treatment or surveillance is appropriate. Recovery depends on the extent of abdominal surgery and how the bowel responds.

Ask whether bowel preparation, fasting or a temporary stoma is expected. Bring a medicine list and mention previous abdominal operations. After surgery, walking, breathing exercises and gradual meals are introduced as tolerated. Care for the incision as instructed, watch bowel movements and avoid strenuous lifting until the team permits it. Keep pathology and imaging appointments because they help clarify the next stage of care.

Report persistent vomiting, a swollen abdomen, worsening pain, fever, wound drainage, inability to pass stool or gas, or a new change in a stoma. Emergency assessment is appropriate for severe pain, collapse, breathing difficulty or heavy bleeding.
