What to expect from travel health consultation for motion sickness

Short answer
A travel health consultation identifies your motion-sickness triggers and helps you plan seating, behaviour, and medication for the journey.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common triggers
- Conflicting movement signals, reading, and visual focus during travel
- Prevention
- Stable viewing, fresh air, light food, and prescribed timing
- Medicine caution
- Some options can cause drowsiness or blurred vision
Why motion sickness happens
Motion sickness can develop when signals from the eyes and the balance organs do not agree, such as when reading in a moving vehicle. Nausea, cold sweating, dizziness, headache, and vomiting may follow. The clinician will ask whether symptoms happen in cars, boats, aircraft, or amusement rides, how quickly they begin, and whether pregnancy, migraine, or medicines affect your choices.
You may discuss a preventive tablet or patch, including when to use it and whether drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, or other effects could affect your plans. Prevention usually works better when started before symptoms, so do not wait until you feel sick unless instructed.
Planning the trip
Choose a position with less movement where possible, face the direction of travel, look at a stable distant point, and keep fresh air available. Avoid reading or prolonged screen use during movement. Eat light meals, sip fluids, and follow medicine instructions. Check whether any product causes sleepiness before driving, swimming alone, or operating equipment.
When to get medical help
Seek advice if vomiting prevents you keeping fluids or medicines down, symptoms continue after travel, or dizziness is new, severe, or unrelated to movement. Urgent assessment is needed for fainting, chest pain, severe headache, weakness on one side, confusion, or signs of significant dehydration.
Questions for the appointment
Ask which seat is likely to help on your type of transport, when to take a preventive medicine, whether it causes drowsiness, and what to do if vomiting follows a dose.

Questions people ask
Should I wait until nausea starts before taking medicine?
Usually prevention is planned before movement, but follow the specific instructions for the product prescribed or recommended for you.
Can motion sickness cause dehydration?
Repeated vomiting can reduce fluids, especially on a long journey. Seek help if you cannot keep drinks down or feel faint.
