What to expect from total hip replacement for hip dysplasia

How the structures involved in Hip Dysplasia differ from normal

Short answer

Expect the surgeon to replace the damaged hip surfaces while planning carefully around the socket shape, leg alignment and the muscles supporting the joint.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How dysplasia affects planning

Hip dysplasia means the socket has not formed deeply or normally enough to contain the ball. Over time, uneven loading can damage cartilage and alter the shape of the socket, femur and surrounding soft tissues. A total hip replacement replaces the worn ball and socket surfaces, but dysplasia may make component positioning, bone support and leg-length planning more detailed than in a typical hip replacement.

The surgical team may discuss extra precautions or imaging before the operation. Afterward, a physiotherapist teaches transfers, walking and exercises while protecting the new joint. Strength, balance and confidence return progressively rather than all at once.

Your part in recovery

Make the home safer by removing loose rugs, preparing a firm chair and arranging help with shopping and bathing. Use the walking aid and follow weight-bearing and movement limits exactly. Take prescribed medicines, care for the incision as instructed and do the exercises in short, regular sessions. Do not compare your pace with someone whose hip anatomy and operation were different.

Attend reviews so the team can assess leg alignment, wound healing and gait. Report ongoing limping or a feeling of instability early, because therapy and equipment can sometimes be adjusted.

Get medical advice promptly

Call the team for fever, increasing wound redness or drainage, worsening pain, new numbness, or a sudden decline in walking ability. Seek urgent help for chest pain, difficulty breathing, faintness, or a swollen painful calf. A fall, sudden severe groin pain or a hip that appears shortened or rotated requires urgent assessment.

Questions for your consultation

Ask how the socket shape affects component choice, whether additional bone support may be needed, and how leg length will be assessed. Discuss your movement precautions, walking aid, physiotherapy goals, driving, work, sleep positions and signs of instability.

Questions people ask

Is hip replacement different with dysplasia?

It can be more technically tailored because the socket, femur and soft tissues may have different shapes or tension. Your surgeon will explain the plan from your imaging.

How long will I use a walking aid?

This varies with strength, balance, pain and the surgeon’s restrictions. Move from a frame or crutches only when your physiotherapist confirms it is safe.
