What to expect from hydroquinone treatment for periorbital hyperpigmentation

Hydroquinone can reduce pigment production, but the skin around the eyes is thin and easily irritated. A clinician may recommend a small amount on selected pigmented skin, keeping a clear distance from the eyelid edge, lashes, and eye surface. Dark circles can also reflect shadowing, visible vessels, or hollowness, which hydroquinone will not correct.

Progress is usually considered by looking at the colour of the skin under similar lighting over time. A gradual response is more realistic than a sudden change. Rubbing, eczema, contact allergy, and sun exposure can keep the area dark, so identifying those contributors forms part of the plan.

Apply only the amount and frequency prescribed, using clean hands and a precise fingertip or applicator. Avoid the eyelids, lash line, inner corners, and eyes unless your clinician gives explicit directions. Use bland moisturiser if recommended, avoid fragranced products that sting, and wear sun protection that does not irritate your eyes.

If the product gets into an eye, rinse with clean lukewarm water and seek advice if discomfort, redness, or blurred vision persists. Do not apply extra product after a missed use, and do not combine lightening products without professional guidance.

Stop and contact a clinician for significant swelling, intense burning, blistering, persistent eye redness, light sensitivity, or vision changes. New blue-black darkening or pigment spreading around the eyes also deserves assessment. Facial swelling or breathing difficulty is an emergency.
