What to expect from topical corticosteroids for sunburn

A corticosteroid cream or ointment dampens inflammatory activity in the skin. A healthcare professional may consider it when redness and itch are troublesome, especially when the skin is intact. It will not reverse ultraviolet injury, remove peeling skin, or protect the area from more sunlight. Product strength, location, and the condition of the skin affect whether it is appropriate. Open blisters, broken skin, infection, and burns involving sensitive areas need specific advice before you apply it.

Follow the prescribed amount and schedule, and spread a thin layer over the affected skin without vigorous rubbing. Keep the area cool with a clean, damp cloth, drink fluids, and use a bland moisturiser if it does not sting. Do not cover the treated skin with an airtight dressing unless instructed. Avoid applying it near the eyes or to broken blisters without clinical direction. Stay out of direct sun and use protective clothing while the skin heals.

Seek prompt medical help for extensive blistering, severe swelling, fever, chills, vomiting, confusion, faintness, dehydration, or worsening pain. Urgent assessment is also appropriate when the burn affects the eyes, face, hands, genitals, or a large area, or when a child or medically vulnerable person is affected. Increasing warmth, pus, spreading redness, or red streaks can signal infection and should be assessed.
