What to expect from topical corticosteroids for psoriasis

Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition that may cause raised, clearly defined plaques with scale. A topical corticosteroid suppresses inflammation in the skin, which can make plaques less red, thick and itchy. It controls active areas; it does not remove the underlying tendency for psoriasis to recur.

Skin on the face, folds and genitals is more delicate than skin on the elbows or knees, so a product suitable for one site may be unsuitable for another. Scalp, nail and widespread disease may need a different treatment plan.

Apply a thin film to psoriasis-affected skin at the prescribed frequency, then wash your hands unless the hands are being treated. Follow the planned course rather than continuing indefinitely because the plaque remains visible. If scale is heavy, ask whether a moisturiser or scale-softening step should come first.

Avoid covering treated skin with tight or airtight dressings unless instructed. Keep the medicine away from the eyes and do not use it on an infection without medical advice. Regular moisturising can reduce dryness and cracking alongside the prescribed treatment.

Arrange review if plaques are rapidly spreading, painful, draining or interfering with sleep, movement or daily activities. Seek urgent care for widespread redness with fever, sudden pus-filled spots, or a rapidly worsening rash. New joint swelling or prolonged morning stiffness also deserves medical assessment because psoriasis can involve joints.

Ask which areas should be treated, how the strength changes by body site, and when to stop or switch to maintenance care. Clarify how to combine it with moisturiser or other psoriasis treatments.
