What to expect from topical corticosteroids for pityriasis alba

Pityriasis alba commonly appears as pale, slightly dry patches, often on a child's cheeks, arms, or other exposed skin. The pale colour can look more noticeable after tanning nearby skin. A corticosteroid is not needed for every patch; it may be considered when there is active redness, dryness, or itch.

The skin colour may take longer to even out than the scale or irritation. This gradual change does not mean stronger or longer steroid treatment is needed, particularly on the face where repeated use can cause thinning or other visible effects.

Use the prescribed mild product sparingly and only for the advised course. Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, avoid harsh soaps and scrubbing, and use shade, clothing, or child-appropriate sunscreen to reduce contrast between the patches and surrounding skin.

Keep the product away from the eyes and do not share it with another child. If the patches are sharply white, spreading quickly, very scaly, or otherwise unusual, arrange an examination rather than extending treatment yourself.

Ask for a review if the patches become painful, ooze, crust, itch persistently, or fail to settle with gentle care. A clinician can check for eczema, fungal infection, or another cause of altered colour when the appearance does not fit pityriasis alba.

Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread blistering, or fever with rapidly worsening skin changes. These are not typical features of uncomplicated pityriasis alba.

Ask whether the patches show active inflammation, how long the mild steroid should be used, and which moisturiser and sunscreen are suitable. Ask when colour should be reassessed and what changes would suggest another diagnosis.
