What to expect from topical corticosteroids for nickel allergy

Nickel allergy is a delayed skin reaction after contact with nickel-containing items. The corticosteroid dampens inflammation already present in the skin; it does not remove nickel from jewellery, clothing fasteners, tools, or another source. Improvement usually begins as exposure stops and the prescribed treatment calms the reaction.

The clinician may choose a product based on the rash's location and severity. Skin on the face, eyelids, and folds needs particular care because it is thinner and more sensitive to steroid side effects than many other areas.

Use a thin layer on the affected skin for the prescribed schedule. Remove or avoid the suspected nickel item, and do not resume contact simply because the redness has faded. A fragrance-free moisturiser can support the skin barrier when applied as advised.

If reactions keep returning, bring the suspected objects to an appointment or ask about patch testing. Do not apply the steroid to broken or infected skin unless the clinician has given specific instructions, and wash your hands after application.

Arrange a review if the rash is spreading, becoming painful, oozing, crusted, or not settling after the prescribed course. Persistent dermatitis may reflect ongoing hidden exposure, infection, or another diagnosis that needs examination.

Get urgent help if swelling affects the lips, tongue, or throat, breathing becomes difficult, or blistering spreads quickly. These symptoms need prompt assessment and are not expected effects of a simple local flare.

Ask which nickel sources to avoid, whether patch testing would help, how long to use the steroid, and whether the treated site needs a milder product. Ask what moisturiser is suitable and how to recognise infection or a steroid-related skin change.
