What to expect from topical corticosteroids for mycosis fungoides

Mycosis fungoides is a form of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma affecting the skin. A topical corticosteroid reduces local inflammation, so patches or plaques may look less red, feel less irritated, and itch less. This is symptom and skin-control treatment; it does not replace the lymphoma care plan or confirm that a lesion has cleared.

The medicine may be prescribed for a defined course, with the product strength matched to the body site and the skin's thickness. Response can vary between lesions, and the dermatologist may examine the skin again to decide whether treatment should continue, change, or be combined with another approach.

Apply a thin layer only to the areas and at the times prescribed. Wash your hands afterward unless your hands are the treated area, and avoid covering the skin with a tight dressing unless the clinician specifically instructs you to do so.

Keep scheduled lymphoma and skin reviews even if the rash improves. Tell the prescribing team about creams, light treatments, or medicines you already use. Overuse can thin skin or cause visible small blood vessels, particularly on the face, folds, or other delicate areas.

Contact the dermatology or oncology team if lesions spread, become thicker, bleed, ulcerate, develop persistent pain, or fail to improve as expected. A new or changing patch needs assessment because treatment response alone cannot identify the cause of every skin change.

Seek urgent medical help for rapidly worsening redness with fever, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or widespread blistering. These features may signal infection, a serious skin reaction, or an allergy rather than a routine treatment response.

Ask which areas need treatment, how long the planned course lasts, and what improvement should look like. Also ask whether the face, groin, or skin folds need a different product, how follow-up will assess the lymphoma, and which changes should prompt an earlier appointment.
