What to expect from topical corticosteroids for dyshidrotic eczema

Dyshidrotic eczema causes intensely itchy, deep-set blisters, usually on the palms, sides of the fingers, or soles. A topical corticosteroid quiets the inflammatory response around the blisters. As the flare settles, the skin may peel, crack, or feel tender before its barrier recovers.

The medicine does not remove every possible trigger. Sweating, wet work, friction, irritants, stress, or contact allergy may contribute for some people. Recurrent flares, pus, or a pattern limited to one foot or hand may need assessment for another condition or infection.

Apply the prescribed medicine to affected skin in the instructed amount and schedule. Use a bland moisturiser to support the barrier, especially after washing, and pat rather than rub the skin dry. Wear protective gloves for wet work, with a breathable layer underneath when advised, and avoid bursting blisters.

Keep footwear breathable and change damp socks. Reduce contact with detergents, solvents, fragranced products, and repeated hand washing where possible. Do not seal the area under an occlusive covering unless your clinician recommends it, because heat and moisture can worsen irritation or infection.

Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, pus, yellow crusting, severe pain, red streaks, fever, or rapidly spreading swelling. Get urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a widespread blistering reaction.

Arrange a review if the blisters keep returning, affect walking or hand use, leave deep cracks, or do not improve with the prescribed plan. Your clinician may check for infection, contact allergy, fungal disease, or a need for a different treatment strategy.
