What to expect from topical corticosteroids for bed bug bites

Bed bug bites can cause itchy red bumps or patches that remain noticeable after the insect has gone. A topical corticosteroid calms the skin's inflammatory response, which may make itching and swelling easier to manage. It does not kill bed bugs, prevent further bites, or confirm that every mark came from a bed bug.

New spots after treatment may indicate continued exposure, but skin reactions can also appear after a delay. Scratching can break the skin and allow infection, so symptom relief should be paired with checking the sleeping area and obtaining appropriate pest-control advice.

Apply a thin layer only to the itchy bite areas and follow the label or clinician's directions. Keep it away from the eyes, mouth, and broken skin unless specifically advised. Cool compresses, clean nails, and loose clothing can reduce scratching while the reaction settles.
