What to expect from topical corticosteroids for atopic dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis causes an overactive inflammatory response and a weakened skin barrier. A topical corticosteroid reduces inflammation during a flare, so itch, redness, swelling, and thickened skin can gradually ease. It controls a flare rather than removing the tendency to have future flares.

The formulation and strength may differ for the face, folds, hands, scalp, or body. Sensitive areas usually need particular caution. A flare can look better before the barrier is fully restored, which is why moisturising and trigger avoidance remain part of the plan.

Use a thin layer on active patches exactly as prescribed, then moisturise as directed. Wash hands after applying unless the hands are affected, and keep the product away from the eyes. Do not use a stronger product, apply it more often, or cover it with a dressing without clinical advice.

Keep baths or showers brief and lukewarm, choose fragrance-free products, and note possible triggers such as heat, sweating, or irritating fabrics. If flares recur often, ask for a written plan that explains treatment during a flare and care between flares.

Get medical advice if the skin becomes increasingly painful, warm, swollen, crusted, or oozing, or if blisters appear. Seek urgent help for rapidly worsening facial swelling or breathing difficulty. Arrange a review when treatment is not easing the flare or when frequent courses are needed.
