Vitiligo causes areas of skin to lose pigment when pigment-producing cells are affected. A topical calcineurin inhibitor reduces local immune signalling and may create conditions that allow pigment to return. Response varies by body site; the face and neck may respond differently from hands, feet, or areas with little remaining pigment.

Repigmentation is usually gradual and may begin as small spots around hair follicles before becoming more blended. The treated skin can feel warm, sting, or itch after application. These sensations should be reported if they are strong, persistent, or accompanied by a rash.

Apply a thin layer to the prescribed patches on clean, dry skin. Wash your hands afterward and keep the medicine away from eyes and lips. Follow the schedule even when change is subtle, and use sun protection because depigmented skin burns more easily and tanning of nearby skin can increase contrast.

Take occasional photographs in similar lighting if your clinician recommends it; this can make slow change easier to assess. Do not apply household lightening products or combine treatments without advice. Keep follow-up visits so the diagnosis and response can be reviewed.

Contact your clinician if patches spread quickly, new areas appear, or treatment causes persistent burning, swelling, cracking, or a rash. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or widespread blistering. A review is useful when colour change is absent despite following the plan, because another approach may be considered.
