Tinea versicolor is a surface yeast imbalance that can produce patches with fine scale, often on the chest, back, shoulders, neck, or upper arms. Topical antifungal treatment targets the yeast and may reduce scale first. The pigment change is a separate part of the skin response, so treated patches may remain lighter or darker after the active infection has settled.

Warm, humid conditions and sweating can make recurrence more likely. A return of fine scale or new patches is worth discussing, especially if the appearance is different from the original episode. A clinician may need to confirm that the spots are tinea versicolor rather than another pigment condition.

Follow the label or prescription directions and cover the affected skin as instructed. Some products are left on for a specified time before rinsing, while others remain on the skin; use the directions for your particular medicine.
