What to Expect from Topical Antifungal Treatment for Tinea Manuum

Tinea manuum is a fungal infection affecting the skin of the hand. A topical antifungal works at the skin surface to reduce the fungus. The affected area may look dry, scaly, cracked, or mildly inflamed before it improves. Itching can ease before the texture and colour look normal, so early visual improvement does not necessarily mean the infection has fully cleared.

Apply the medicine exactly as directed, including to the areas around the visible rash when instructed. Fungal infection can also involve the feet or nails, and untreated areas may contribute to recurrence. Your clinician may therefore examine more than the hand.

Wash and dry your hands, then apply a thin layer to the prescribed skin. Wash again after application if the treated area is not the hands, and avoid sharing towels, gloves, or personal grooming items. Keep skin folds dry and change damp gloves or clothing promptly.

Do not stop as soon as the scaling looks better unless your clinician tells you to. Do not put the product on eyes, inside the mouth, or broken skin unless specifically advised. If the product causes marked burning, swelling, or a new rash, pause and ask the prescriber how to proceed.

Seek medical advice if redness spreads, pain becomes prominent, pus or crusting develops, or cracks make hand movement difficult. Arrange a review when the rash does not begin settling with correct use, returns repeatedly, or involves the nails. These changes can mean the diagnosis needs checking or that a different treatment is required.
