What to expect from topical antifungal treatment for seborrheic dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis commonly affects oily areas such as the scalp, hairline, eyebrows, sides of the nose, ears, and beard area. It can cause flaky scale, redness, itch, or a greasy-looking surface. A topical antifungal helps reduce the yeast contribution to this inflammation; it does not change the skin’s tendency to flare.

Flaking may ease before redness or sensitivity settles. The condition can return after improvement, so a clinician may suggest a maintenance routine rather than treatment only during the most visible flare.

Apply the product to the directed areas with clean hands and follow instructions for contact time, rinsing, or leaving it on. For scalp products, keep them away from the eyes and rinse thoroughly if they run into them. Use lukewarm water, avoid vigorous scratching, and choose fragrance-free cleansers or moisturisers if your skin is easily irritated.

Keep a note of scale, itch, redness, and flare triggers such as harsh products or cold, dry conditions. Do not add a steroid or another medicated product unless a clinician recommends the combination.

Arrange review if the rash becomes painful, crusted, weepy, swollen, or spreads beyond its usual areas, or if hair loss occurs in affected scalp skin. Seek advice if symptoms do not improve with the planned course, return very frequently, or worsen after application. Eye swelling or vision symptoms need prompt attention.
