Ringworm is a contagious fungal infection that can produce an itchy, scaly, expanding patch with a more active edge. With effective treatment, itch and scaling may ease before the colour or outline of the skin looks normal. A remaining mark does not always mean the infection is still active, so the treatment plan and examination matter.

Ringworm on the scalp, beard area, or nails may need a different approach from a small patch on the body. A rash that is not improving may be eczema, contact irritation, or another infection rather than ringworm.

Wash and dry the area, apply the medicine exactly as directed, and wash your hands afterward. Use a separate towel, change clothing that touches the rash, and avoid sharing bedding, clothing, brushes, or sports equipment. Keep the area dry and avoid scratching, which can damage skin and move infection to other sites.

Seek medical review if the rash involves the scalp, beard, face, eyes, or genitals, covers a large area, becomes painful or pus-filled, or spreads despite treatment. Arrange care if it is not clearly improving within the advised period or if application causes significant irritation. A person with reduced immunity should seek advice promptly.
