What to expect from topical antifungal treatment for fungal acne

Fungal acne, also called malassezia folliculitis, causes many small, similar-looking bumps around hair follicles. A topical antifungal is intended to reduce the yeast involved on the skin surface and in follicles. Improvement is gradual rather than immediate. Mild dryness, stinging, redness, or irritation can occur, especially on sensitive skin. These symptoms should be discussed if they are strong, spreading, or persistent.

Not every acne-like rash is fungal acne. Ordinary acne, folliculitis from bacteria, heat rash, and irritation can look similar, so a lack of response may mean the diagnosis or plan needs review.

Use the product exactly as directed, applying it to clean, dry skin and washing your hands afterward. Avoid scrubbing, picking, heavy occlusive products, and sharing towels or applicators. Keep the routine simple while your skin settles; introduce new cosmetics or active ingredients cautiously. Continue for the advised course even if the bumps start to look calmer, unless a clinician tells you to stop.

Take note of itch, new bumps, redness, and areas involved. A clinician can use that pattern to decide whether to continue, change the product, or look for another cause.

Seek medical advice if the rash is painful, rapidly spreading, oozing, markedly swollen, or affecting the eyes. Arrange a review when symptoms do not improve after the advised treatment period, return repeatedly, or become worse after application.
