What to expect from topical antifungal treatment for cradle cap

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, can produce yellow or greasy scale on the scalp and sometimes flaky skin around the eyebrows, ears, or folds. Antifungal treatment may be considered when yeast-related inflammation is suspected or when routine scalp care has not been enough.

It should not be started from an adult product or used more often because scale looks stubborn. Babies’ skin absorbs products differently, and the clinician will choose a suitable preparation and schedule.

Follow the prescribed directions precisely and keep the product away from the eyes, mouth, and broken skin. Use a mild baby shampoo if advised. A soft brush may loosen scale after washing, but never pick or scrape flakes from the scalp.

Keep fingernails short and watch the skin after each application. Use separate clean hands for applying medicine, and stop using a product that causes marked redness or swelling until the prescriber gives advice.

Contact the baby’s clinician if the scalp becomes more inflamed, wet, crusted, painful, or develops spreading redness, or if the treatment causes a rash or swelling. Review is also sensible when scale returns repeatedly or appears beyond the scalp.

Seek prompt medical attention if the baby seems unwell, has a fever, is feeding poorly, or has rapidly spreading redness or swelling. These signs are not explained by ordinary dry scale alone.
