What to expect from topical antibiotic therapy for acne

A topical antibiotic is applied to acne-prone skin rather than used only on a single visible spot, unless your prescriber gives different instructions. It targets bacteria and inflammatory activity in the follicles. It may not clear blocked pores on its own, so a clinician may pair it with another acne treatment. Improvement is gradual, and new spots can still appear during the early part of care. The choice depends on the type of acne, sensitive areas, previous treatments, and whether scarring is developing.

Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin according to the prescribed schedule, avoiding eyes, lips, and broken skin. Wash hands after use. Use a gentle cleanser and non-comedogenic moisturiser if recommended, and introduce other irritating products only with guidance. Do not squeeze spots, share medicine, or keep using an antibiotic indefinitely without review. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, allergies, bowel symptoms, and other medicines. Consistent application and a follow-up plan help decide whether the treatment should continue, change, or be combined with a non-antibiotic option.

Contact the prescriber for severe burning, swelling, rash, or worsening irritation. Seek urgent help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty. If acne becomes painful, deep, rapidly scarring, or emotionally distressing, arrange a review rather than adding products yourself. New severe diarrhoea or significant abdominal symptoms during antibiotic treatment should also be reported promptly.
