What to expect from tendon repair surgery for mallet finger

Mallet finger occurs when the tendon that straightens the fingertip is disrupted, sometimes with a small bone injury. Surgery may repair the tendon or stabilise the joint, depending on the injury. The fingertip is protected while tissues heal, and the splint must be positioned as instructed. Later, a hand therapist guides gradual bending and straightening so stiffness is managed without putting sudden stress on the repair.

Keep the splint dry and in the prescribed position, including during sleep or bathing if instructed. Elevate the hand when it is swollen, keep the wound clean, and do not force the fingertip straight or bent. Attend hand therapy and practise the exact exercises provided. Tell the team if the splint rubs, loosens, or no longer supports the fingertip.

Seek prompt advice for worsening redness, drainage, fever, increasing swelling, or pain that is not controlled. Urgent assessment is appropriate if the fingertip becomes blue, pale, cold, numb, or difficult to move. If the splint comes off and the fingertip droops, support it in the instructed position and contact the surgical team.
