What to expect from tendon repair surgery for distal biceps tendon rupture

The surgeon reattaches the distal biceps tendon to the forearm bone. After surgery, the elbow is commonly supported in a brace or splint while the repair heals. Movement is introduced in stages, and the allowed range is set by the surgical team. Therapy later targets elbow bending, turning the palm up, grip, and safe return to work or sport. Strength may return gradually, so comparing the recovering arm with the other arm too early can be misleading.

Keep the arm supported exactly as directed and avoid lifting, forceful pulling, and resisted forearm rotation until cleared. Keep the incision clean and observe the hand for changes in colour, warmth, sensation, or movement. Attend therapy appointments and practise only the prescribed exercises. Arrange help with tasks that require two hands, especially while the brace limits elbow movement.

Call the surgical team if the wound becomes increasingly red, swollen, painful, or starts draining, or if you develop fever. Seek urgent care for a cold or pale hand, severe swelling, new loss of sensation, or sudden inability to move the fingers. A new pop with increasing pain or weakness should be reported promptly.
