What to expect from a telemedicine consultation for common cold

The clinician may ask when symptoms began and whether you have fever, cough, sore throat, blocked nose, breathing difficulty, chest pain, or reduced drinking. They may ask about asthma, pregnancy, immune problems, allergies, and regular medicines.

Camera-based assessment can show breathing effort, throat appearance, skin colour, or visible swelling, but it cannot replace every physical examination. The clinician may recommend an in-person visit, testing, or another service when the symptoms do not fit a straightforward cold.

Choose a quiet, well-lit place and keep a list of medicines and medical conditions nearby. Have your temperature reading, symptom timeline, and recent exposure information available if you know them. Keep water within reach and follow the clinician’s advice about rest, fluids, and symptom relief.

Use medicines only as directed and check combination cold products so you do not accidentally duplicate an ingredient. Antibiotics do not treat viral colds unless a clinician identifies another reason for them. Arrange follow-up if symptoms persist, change, or interfere with drinking and sleep.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion, fainting, dehydration, or a rapidly worsening condition. Arrange in-person review for breathing symptoms, persistent high fever, severe one-sided facial pain, or symptoms in a person with significant long-term illness.
