What to Expect from TCA CROSS for Acne Scars

TCA CROSS uses a high-strength trichloroacetic acid solution placed into individual atrophic scars rather than spread across the whole face. The application creates a controlled injury in the scar base, which can stimulate collagen remodelling as the area repairs. It is most often discussed for narrow, deep ice-pick or similar pitted scars; broad rolling scars may need a different approach or a combination plan.

During treatment, the spots may turn white briefly as the solution reacts with the skin. Stinging or warmth can occur. The treated points then darken, form tiny crusts, and shed over the following days. Improvement is gradual, and more than one appointment may be suggested because each scar responds differently.

Before treatment, tell the clinician about active acne, cold sores, eczema, recent tanning, medicines, and previous reactions to chemical peels. Arrive with clean skin and follow instructions about pausing irritating products. Afterward, do not pick or scrub the crusts. Use the recommended gentle cleanser and moisturiser, protect the area from sunlight, and wait until the skin has recovered before restarting retinoids, exfoliating acids, or other strong products.

Contact the treating clinic if pain is worsening rather than settling, redness is spreading beyond the treated points, swelling is marked, or drainage develops. Seek prompt medical assessment for fever, facial swelling affecting the eyes or breathing, or signs of a severe allergic reaction. New or persistent darkening or lightening also deserves review, particularly in deeper skin tones.
