What to expect from targeted therapy for Waldenstrom macroglobulinaemia

Waldenstrom macroglobulinaemia is a type of lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma that can produce an abnormal protein. Your haematologist considers symptoms, blood counts, protein levels, organ effects and previous treatment when choosing a targeted medicine. Treatment may be an oral drug, an infusion, or part of a combination plan.

Follow-up may include blood counts, protein measurements, kidney and liver tests, examination and symptom review. The team may watch headaches, blurred vision, dizziness, bleeding, numbness, fatigue or enlarged lymph nodes. Side effects depend on the medicine and may include infection, diarrhoea, rash, bruising or infusion reactions.

Take oral doses at the prescribed time and ask what to do if you forget one. Before using a new medicine or supplement, check with your haematology team because interactions can affect treatment or bleeding risk. Keep appointments for blood tests even when you feel well.

Record changes in vision, headaches, balance, numbness, bruising, bowel habits and energy. Drink according to your clinician's advice, use infection precautions recommended for you, and tell the team about planned procedures. Do not pause treatment on your own.

Contact your team promptly for fever or chills, new infection symptoms, unusual bleeding, worsening bruising, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, increasing numbness, severe headache or new visual changes. These can reflect infection, low blood counts, treatment effects or changes related to the abnormal protein.

Seek emergency help for sudden loss of vision, confusion, fainting, new weakness, trouble speaking, severe chest pain, difficulty breathing or uncontrolled bleeding. Use the after-hours number provided by your treatment centre if you are unsure how quickly to be assessed.
