What to expect from targeted therapy for thyroid cancer

Your specialist considers the thyroid cancer type, whether it has spread, previous surgery or radioactive iodine treatment, and changes found in the tumour. A targeted medicine may block a growth signal or interfere with the blood supply that helps cancer cells persist. Some treatments are tablets; the schedule and duration depend on the medicine and your response.

Follow-up can include blood pressure checks, blood tests, heart or liver monitoring and imaging. Side effects may include tiredness, diarrhoea, skin or hand-foot changes, mouth soreness, appetite changes or raised blood pressure. Your team can treat symptoms and alter the dose when needed.

Take each dose as prescribed and ask whether food, antacids, supplements or other medicines affect it. Keep a record of blood pressure if requested, bowel changes, skin changes, weight, pain and voice or swallowing symptoms. Bring this record and your full medicine list to appointments.

Use recommended skin care, drink fluids unless your clinician has set a limit, and pace activity around fatigue. Do not stop or restart tablets independently. Contact the team before dental work, surgery or a new treatment so bleeding, healing and drug interactions can be considered.

Call promptly for persistent diarrhoea or vomiting, inability to drink, severe skin peeling, mouth sores that prevent eating, a marked rise in blood pressure, yellow skin, dark urine, unusual bleeding or rapidly worsening swelling in the neck.

Seek emergency help for severe chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, sudden weakness, confusion, heavy bleeding or sudden severe headache. New difficulty breathing or swallowing also needs urgent assessment.
