What to expect from targeted therapy for kidney cancer

How the structures involved in Kidney Cancer differ from normal

Short answer

Targeted therapy for kidney cancer aims at signals that help cancer cells grow or blood vessels supplying a tumour, with regular checks for benefit and toxicity.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible format
Tablets or an infusion
Key monitoring
Blood pressure, organ function, symptoms and imaging

What you may experience

The medicine is chosen according to the type and extent of kidney cancer, previous treatment, test results and your general health. Some targeted medicines are tablets; others may be given by infusion. Treatment can be continuous or arranged in cycles, with reviews to decide whether the plan remains suitable.

Your team may check blood pressure, weight, blood counts, kidney function, liver function and thyroid activity. Imaging helps assess the tumour and any areas outside the kidney. Side effects can be different from chemotherapy and still deserve early attention.

Looking after yourself during treatment

Take tablets at the prescribed time and do not change the dose on your own. Record blood pressure if your team asks you to, and bring the record to appointments. Tell clinicians about headaches, diarrhoea, mouth soreness, hand or foot tenderness, skin changes, appetite loss or increasing tiredness.

Check before using painkillers, supplements or non-prescription medicines. Drink according to the advice given for your kidney function, and pace activity around your energy. Keep appointments because laboratory changes may need action before you feel unwell.

Warning signs

Contact your care team quickly for a severe headache, very high blood pressure reading, persistent diarrhoea or vomiting, reduced urine, yellow skin, unusual bleeding, fever or a painful skin reaction. Get emergency help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, collapse, confusion or sudden weakness.

Questions to bring

Which treatment target applies to my cancer? Which home checks are needed? How will you protect my kidney function? Which symptoms mean I should pause a dose? When will imaging show whether treatment is helping?

Questions people ask

Will treatment affect my remaining kidney function?

Your team monitors kidney-related tests and adjusts care when needed, while considering your wider health.

Can side effects be treated?

Many can be managed with supportive treatment, dose changes or a short interruption decided by your oncology team.
