What to expect from targeted therapy for bowel cancer

Bowel cancer tumours can have different molecular features. Testing biopsy or surgical tissue helps your oncology team decide whether a targeted medicine matches your tumour. The treatment may block a growth signal, affect blood-vessel formation or help the immune system recognise cancer cells, depending on the medicine.

Some treatments are combined with chemotherapy or another systemic medicine. Commonly discussed effects include skin or nail changes, diarrhoea, mouth soreness, tiredness, high blood pressure, infusion reactions or changes in blood tests. Your team will explain which effects fit your drug and how response will be reviewed.

Before treatment, give the team a complete list of medicines and supplements and mention previous reactions, bowel symptoms, blood-pressure problems or skin conditions. If you receive an infusion, tell staff immediately about itching, flushing, chest tightness or dizziness.

For tablets, follow the timing and food instructions, keep a record of doses and ask what to do after vomiting or a missed dose. Attend blood tests, scans and blood-pressure checks. Use only skin or diarrhoea products approved by your team, especially if symptoms are persistent.

Report fever, severe diarrhoea, blood in the stool, persistent vomiting, dehydration, a spreading blistering rash, or worsening abdominal pain without delay. Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, sudden weakness, or swelling of the face or throat.

Ask which tumour markers were tested, what the treatment is intended to achieve, whether it is combined with chemotherapy, how scans will guide decisions, and which symptoms require same-day advice.
