What to expect from subcision for atrophic scars

Atrophic scars are areas where skin has lost volume or is pulled inward. During subcision, the clinician numbs the skin and guides an instrument beneath a selected scar to divide the fibrous attachments that create the indentation. The aim is to let the surface rise as healing occurs. Scar depth, edges, skin thickness, and whether the scar is tethered all influence whether subcision is suitable.

Share your history of easy bruising, bleeding disorders, cold sores, raised scars, active infection, and all medicines or supplements before the appointment. After treatment, keep the area clean, follow dressing instructions, and avoid pressure, scratching, or vigorous rubbing. Swelling, soreness, bruising, and a temporarily uneven texture are possible. Use only products recommended for the healing skin and attend follow-up before deciding whether another session or a combined approach is needed.

Contact the treating clinic if pain, redness, warmth, swelling, or drainage is increasing rather than settling. Fever, pus, or spreading redness may indicate infection and needs prompt assessment. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, sudden facial swelling, fainting, or uncontrolled bleeding. Do not massage a painful lump unless the clinician specifically instructs you to do so.
