What to expect from stoma surgery for bowel cancer

During stoma surgery, the surgeon brings part of the bowel through an opening in the abdominal wall. A pouch attaches over the stoma to collect stool, so bowel movements leave through the abdomen rather than the usual route. The stoma may be temporary or long-term; this depends on the bowel operation, healing needs and your cancer treatment plan.

A stoma nurse usually helps you learn how to empty and change the pouch, protect the surrounding skin and recognise your usual output. At first the stoma can be swollen and its output may vary. Your team will explain what supplies to use and how to obtain them.

Before surgery, ask where the stoma is likely to be placed and discuss clothing, work and daily routines. After surgery, wash your hands before stoma care, follow the pouch instructions and increase activity gradually. Keep hydrated as advised and record changes that your nurse asks you to monitor.

Avoid lifting or strenuous activity until the surgical team confirms it is suitable. Attend wound, stoma and oncology reviews. A dietitian or stoma nurse can help if certain foods worsen gas, loose output or discomfort.

Seek prompt advice if the stoma becomes very dark, stops producing output with cramping or vomiting, leaks repeatedly, or the skin becomes increasingly sore. Contact the surgical team for fever, worsening abdominal pain, redness, swelling or discharge from the wound. Heavy bleeding, collapse or severe dehydration needs emergency care.
