What to expect from statin therapy after a transient ischaemic attack

A transient ischaemic attack is a temporary episode of stroke-like symptoms caused by interrupted blood flow to the brain. A statin lowers cholesterol and helps reduce artery-related risk; it does not treat sudden neurological symptoms as they happen and does not replace urgent assessment.

Follow-up may include cholesterol checks, a review of blood pressure and heart rhythm, and discussion of antiplatelet or other medicines where appropriate. The treatment can be working without a sensation, so take the prevention plan seriously even if the episode has passed.

Take the prescribed statin consistently and keep a current list of all medicines. Tell your clinician about muscle symptoms, liver problems, pregnancy or plans for pregnancy, and any supplements. Do not stop the statin or other TIA medicines because you feel recovered; discuss concerns with the prescribing team.

Attend follow-up appointments and work on the risk factors identified for you, such as blood pressure, glucose, smoking, activity, or an irregular heartbeat. Ask how missed doses should be handled rather than taking an extra dose without advice.

Any new facial drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty, sudden vision change, loss of balance, or severe unexplained headache needs emergency help immediately, even if it improves. For statin concerns, seek prompt advice about severe muscle pain or weakness, dark urine, or marked illness; breathing difficulty or facial swelling needs emergency care.
