What to expect from sports physiotherapy for sports hernia

Short answer
Expect an assessment of groin, hip and trunk loading followed by progressive strengthening and a carefully planned return to sport.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What rehabilitation may include
Sports hernia is often used for activity-related pain around the groin or lower abdominal region, so a clinician should first check whether another condition could explain the symptoms. Assessment may include resisted hip work, trunk movement, coughing or sport-specific actions when appropriate. Treatment can begin with comfortable exercises for the abdominal wall, hip and pelvic muscles, then progress to adductor loading, running, cutting and kicking. The plan is adjusted if symptoms remain irritable or do not follow the expected pattern.
How to work through the plan
Use the prescribed load and avoid repeatedly provoking pain with maximal twisting, sprinting or kicking. Keep notes on symptoms during exercise and later that day, since delayed aggravation can guide the next progression. Continue only the conditioning options your clinician approves. If rehabilitation is not improving function, ask whether a sports medicine or surgical review is appropriate rather than pushing through worsening groin pain.
When to seek further care
Arrange medical assessment for a new groin bulge, increasing swelling, fever, persistent pain at rest, or pain that is not linked to activity. Seek urgent care for a painful bulge that cannot be reduced, severe abdominal pain with vomiting, sudden testicular pain, or difficulty passing urine. These symptoms require prompt evaluation and are not routine rehabilitation soreness.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what diagnosis is being treated, whether imaging or a surgical opinion is needed, which exercises are suitable now, and what criteria will guide a return to cutting, kicking and competition.

Questions people ask
Is a sports hernia the same as an inguinal hernia?
No. The terms can describe different problems, and a clinician should assess the groin carefully because treatment may differ.
What if physiotherapy does not help?
Tell your clinician if pain or function is not changing; they may reassess the diagnosis or arrange specialist review.
