What to expect from splinting for thumb arthritis

Thumb arthritis often affects the joint at the base of the thumb, making pinching, opening jars, writing, or using a phone uncomfortable. A splint can steady the joint and keep the thumb in a more useful position during a painful task. Some designs cover the wrist as well, while others leave the wrist free. Support may ease symptoms, but it does not reverse joint changes.

Use the splint during activities that trigger pain or for the schedule your clinician recommends. Make sure the thumb is supported without pressure on the web space, nail, or skin crease. Practise gentle finger movement and take breaks from repetitive pinching when allowed. Check for rubbing, moisture, swelling, or stiffness, and ask a therapist to adjust the fit if everyday tasks become harder.

Ask for medical or therapy advice if pain continues to increase, the thumb becomes weaker, or the splint causes tingling, pale or blue skin, swelling, or a sore area. Seek urgent care after an injury that produces marked deformity, sudden loss of movement, or severe pain.
