What to expect from splinting for a clavicle fracture

A clavicle fracture is a break in the collarbone linking the breastbone and shoulder. A support device may hold the shoulder and arm in a protected position, making movement easier to control. The precise device depends on the fracture pattern, skin condition, pain, and the treating team's examination. Support is not a substitute for checking the bone, nerves, blood vessels, and shoulder movement.

Follow the prescribed wearing schedule and learn how to put the support on without pulling the injured shoulder. Keep straps comfortably secure, inspect the skin beneath them, and keep the arm and fingers moving only as instructed. Do not lift, push, pull, or return to sport until cleared. Sleeping may be easier with the upper body supported and the injured side protected. Keep follow-up appointments so alignment, healing, and shoulder function can be reviewed.

Seek urgent care for new shortness of breath, chest pain, faintness, or coughing blood after the injury. Get prompt medical help if the hand becomes cold, pale, blue, very swollen, or newly numb, or if you cannot move the fingers. Contact the treating team for worsening pain, pressure from the support, skin breakdown, or a noticeable change in the shoulder shape.
