Short answer

Splinting for an AC joint injury supports the shoulder while pain settles, then movement and strength return through a gradual rehabilitation plan.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Support goal
Limit painful shoulder movement while injured tissues settle.
Keep moving
Move the fingers, wrist, and elbow when permitted to reduce stiffness.

How splinting helps

The acromioclavicular joint connects the collarbone to the shoulder blade. After a fall or blow, its supporting ligaments can stretch or tear. A sling or prescribed shoulder support can reduce painful movement and make daily tasks easier while the tissues recover. It does not physically repair every ligament injury, and the correct support depends on the injury grade and examination.

It is common for the shoulder to feel stiff after being supported. Hand, wrist, and elbow movement may be encouraged, while overhead reaching, pushing, pulling, and contact activity wait until advised. A visible bump near the joint can remain even when comfort and function improve.

Using the support well

Wear the sling for the periods prescribed and keep the forearm supported without letting the shoulder hang. Check the skin, loosen pressure if instructed, and remove or adjust it only as your clinician teaches. Use cold packs with a cloth barrier if recommended, and take medicines according to the label or care plan.

Begin the allowed hand, wrist, and elbow exercises, followed by shoulder range-of-motion work when cleared. Physiotherapy can restore control before resistance training. Do not test the joint with heavy lifting simply because pain has eased.

When to get help

Arrange prompt review if pain is worsening, the support causes skin damage, or the shoulder becomes increasingly swollen or deformed. Seek urgent care for a cold or blue hand, severe hand numbness, loss of pulse, chest pain, or breathing difficulty after the injury.

Questions for your clinician

Ask how long to use the support, which movements are safe now, whether the joint needs imaging or orthopaedic review, when to start physiotherapy, and what strength or motion is required before work, driving, or sport.
