What to expect from a sleep study for obstructive sleep apnoea

Short answer

For suspected obstructive sleep apnoea, expect overnight monitoring of breathing, oxygen, heart rate and sleep-related movement, either at home or in a sleep centre.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the recordings measure

Obstructive sleep apnoea happens when the upper airway narrows or closes during sleep, interrupting airflow. The study looks for repeated changes in airflow, breathing effort and oxygen, alongside pulse and body position. A fuller centre-based test can also record brain waves and help show when you are asleep.

Home testing is convenient for some adults, while a sleep centre may be preferred when symptoms are complex or another sleep condition is possible. The clinician interprets the pattern rather than relying on one symptom such as snoring.

Preparing for the night

Use the equipment exactly as demonstrated and ask what to do if a sensor comes loose. Follow instructions about medicines, alcohol, caffeine and bedtime. Keep your normal sleep schedule where possible, and report nasal blockage, lung disease, pregnancy, or medicines that affect alertness or breathing.

Return the device as instructed. Results are matched with your symptoms and examination. If obstructive sleep apnoea is confirmed, your clinician may discuss options such as positive airway pressure, an oral appliance, weight-related support, positional measures or other treatment suited to you.

When to seek care

Seek prompt advice if you have witnessed breathing pauses, choking during sleep, severe daytime sleepiness, or near-misses while driving. Get urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness while awake, fainting, or new confusion. Avoid driving or operating machinery when sleepiness makes it unsafe.

Useful questions

Ask whether home or centre testing fits your symptoms, how to use each sensor, which medicines to continue, and how results will affect treatment. Ask what to do if the recording is incomplete or does not explain your symptoms.

Questions people ask

Can a home sleep study diagnose obstructive sleep apnoea?

It can help assess suspected obstructive sleep apnoea in selected people, but a centre-based study may be needed when the picture is unclear.

What if I remove a sensor during sleep?

Follow the centre's instructions; some devices can be replaced, while an incomplete recording may need repeating.
