What to expect from shoulder arthroscopy for calcific tendinitis

Through small incisions, the surgeon uses a camera to inspect the shoulder and instruments to treat the calcium deposit in the affected tendon. The exact work depends on its position and on what is seen during surgery; additional repair may be discussed if the tendon needs support.

The shoulder is commonly painful and stiff at first. A sling may be used for comfort or protection, but its duration depends on the procedure. Arthroscopy does not make normal movement return immediately: swelling, guarded movement and tendon healing shape the early recovery.

Arrange help with dressing, washing, meals and transport while arm movement is limited. Follow instructions about fasting, medicines, wound care and keeping dressings dry. Do not lift or reach overhead until your surgical team gives permission.

Physiotherapy normally begins with safe movement, then progresses toward shoulder control and strength. Keep exercises within the prescribed range and attend reviews so the programme can be adjusted as healing progresses.

Contact the surgical team for worsening wound redness, drainage, fever, uncontrolled pain or swelling that is not responding to the agreed plan. Seek urgent care for chest pain, breathing difficulty, a blue or cold hand, or sudden severe weakness or numbness in the arm.

Ask whether the deposit will be removed alone or with tendon repair, how long the sling is expected to be needed, when driving and work may resume, and which movements are restricted during rehabilitation.
