What to expect from shockwave therapy for tendinopathy

How the structures involved in Tendinopathy differ from normal

Short answer

Expect the clinician to identify the painful tendon, apply gel, deliver adjustable pressure waves, and pair treatment with progressive exercises.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Symptoms and function may change progressively rather than straight away

What happens during treatment

The visit begins with questions about your symptoms and an examination of tendon movement and loading. The clinician places a small applicator over the target area and sends pulses through a layer of gel. Sensations vary with the tendon and setting: tapping, pressure, vibration or brief discomfort are possible. The intensity should be discussed during the session.

Temporary tenderness, redness or bruising may follow. Tendon symptoms commonly change gradually, and the response is considered together with strength, movement and tolerance for normal activities rather than pain alone.

What you can do around sessions

Tell the provider about pregnancy, infection near the area, altered sensation, blood-thinning medicine, bleeding conditions or recent procedures. Wear clothing that permits access to the tendon. Afterward, follow the agreed loading plan and avoid unaccustomed heavy exercise while the area is reactive.

Rehabilitation may include mobility work followed by controlled strengthening. Increase activity in small steps, record useful changes such as walking, gripping or climbing tolerance, and report a flare before changing the plan yourself.

When to seek help

Call the clinic if pain becomes intense or persistent, or if swelling, heat, redness or bruising is increasing. Get urgent assessment for sudden loss of function, a new snap with marked weakness, severe numbness, or symptoms suggesting an allergic or serious reaction.

Questions for your appointment

Ask how the tendon diagnosis was made, what activity level is suitable after each session, which exercise signals overload, and how follow-up will determine whether the plan should change.

Questions people ask

Does the treatment feel the same for every tendon?

No. The sensation depends on the tendon, the surrounding tissue and the device settings, so tell the clinician if the intensity needs adjusting.

Should you stop all exercise?

Usually the goal is modified, progressive loading rather than complete rest, but the appropriate exercises depend on the tendon and your assessment.
