What to expect from shockwave therapy for plantar fasciitis

How the structures involved in Plantar Fasciitis differ from normal

Short answer

Expect targeted pulses along the painful plantar fascia, some temporary tenderness, and gradual progress supported by foot and calf rehabilitation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Treatment area
Painful plantar fascia near the heel or sole
Supportive care
Staged walking plus foot and calf rehabilitation

What happens during a session

The clinician examines the sole and heel, marks the most sensitive area, and applies gel. A handheld device delivers pulses along the plantar fascia, commonly near its attachment at the heel. You may notice tapping, pressure, or a sharp sensation; intensity can be adjusted. Plantar fasciitis is often also called plantar fasciopathy. Shockwave therapy is intended to support recovery in irritated tissue, while footwear, stretching, and progressive loading address forces on the foot.

Before and after treatment

Wear practical shoes and mention blood-thinning medicine, bleeding problems, reduced sensation, pregnancy, or a recent injection. The sole may be tender after treatment, so avoid a long walk, running, or jumping if these increase symptoms. Follow the prescribed calf and foot exercises, increase walking in stages, and use supportive footwear if recommended. A temporary flare does not by itself show whether the treatment will help; progress is judged over follow-up visits.

When to seek care

Contact the clinic if pain is severe or worsening, swelling persists, or bruising is extensive. Seek urgent assessment for sudden inability to bear weight, new weakness or numbness, fever with a hot red foot, or a wound that is draining. These findings need evaluation rather than routine aftercare.

Questions for your doctor

Ask where the pulses will be applied, how walking and exercise should be modified, which footwear changes may help, and when stretching or strengthening should progress. Ask how improvement will be reviewed if morning heel pain continues.
